I’m really excited to interview Vanessa Gordon, publisher at East End Taste Magazine, about The Hamptons, New York. Vanessa’s tips for the best things to do in The Hamptons are awesome because she’s lived in The Hamptons her entire life. Her family came out to the eastern end of Long Island in the 1940s. She loves the charm of Sag Harbor and how it is one of the prettiest and most quaint seaside towns in America.

The Hamptons, New York

The Hamptons are a string of seaside communities dotting the eastern end of Long Island’s South Fork. It is well-known for being a summer destination for affluent New York City residents. However, it can be an affordable beach vacation for the average family as well.

Summer is the busiest time of year for The Hamptons. From May to October, you’ll see visitors from all over New York flock to the beaches and the festivals that happen every weekend. Some of Vanessa’s favorites are the Sag Harbor American Music Festival, Harborfest, and Hamptons International Film Festival. Plus, there are many craft fairs and art shows throughout the summer.

Vanessa recommends visiting in October. She feels that is the best time of year to visit because businesses are still open and it’s not too busy.

We share a lot of resources and local suggestions in today’s podcast, but you should also check out Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the local convention and visitor’s bureau. They are a wealth of information and can help you plan an itinerary based on your time, budget, and interests.

Getting around The Hamptons

The local airport is Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP), which is a little over an hour to downtown Sag Harbor. To get to The Hamptons, Vanessa recommends taking the Hampton Jitney or Hampton Luxury Liner from the airport. You can also hop on the LIRR train from Jamaica Station.

Vanessa strongly recommends renting a car when you visit The Hamptons. Click here for the best offers from Avis, Budget, or Hertz.

A lot of people bike around town, but you should be careful while biking. The roads can be narrow in some parts and many tourists aren’t always paying attention while driving on unfamiliar roads. Uber and Lyft are excellent ways to get around if you want to avoid driving a car.

If you only need a car for a couple of hours, you can rent by the hour with Zipcar. Join now to get $25 loaded into your account.
