Kailua is a tight-knit community with a laid-back vibe. It offers uncrowded beaches that are perfectly situated to catch the rising sun. It’s close to Honolulu, but without the throngs of tourists getting in your way as you cruise through town. Many celebrities come to Kailua to vacation because they can enjoy the town and be treated like anyone else.

- Maunawili Falls (reviews) – 30 minute hike where you can jump 40 feet into the water
- North Shore – This is a great place for tourism and surfing! There are huge waves here!

- Island Snow (reviews) – Grab a shaved ice treat. The Kailua Chamber of Commerce website has a picture of President Obama eating one of their shaved ices.
- Kono’s Kailua (reviews) – Luau-style BBQ pork that is very moist and delicious
- Maui Brewing Co. (reviews) – Great local craft brews
- Teddy’s Bigger Burgers (reviews) – Grab any Hawaiian burger for lunch!

Getting around Kailua
The local airport is Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), which is about 20 miles from Kailua. The airport is on the south side of the island, while Kailua is on the east coast.
David says that you don’t need to rent a car if you stay in Waikiki. Public transportation is pretty good and bike-share rentals are easy to find. Uber and Lyft are also excellent ways to get around.
