Travel like a local.

Why I started this podcast

Hey everyone, thanks for listening to the We Travel There podcast. I created the show to encourage people to travel like a local.

About me

I’m the host, Lee Huffman. After living in Southern California all of my life, we moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in July 2018.

My family is pretty awesome. Anna is a working professional and puts up with my crazy travel adventures. Timothy and Scarlett are in school and they love to travel. Both of their first flights were at 6 weeks of age!

I used to work in corporate finance for a regional bank, but I left that job to be a full-time blogger, freelance writer, and (now) podcast host.

You can read about the latest travel and credit card rewards news on my site BaldThoughts.com, where I show people how to travel more, spend less, and live better.

I also write about travel, credit cards, early retirement, and other personal finance topics at:

Just Google my name and you’ll find plenty of my articles.

How the show got started

I grew up with a love of travel. Mostly, it was road trips from California with my parents to see National Parks and family.

My wife, Anna, and I started dating and traveling together in 2006. It was a running joke that we never went on dates. Instead, we went on weekend trips around the US using airline miles, hotel points, and my timeshares.

Wherever we travel we try to avoid renting a car so that we can travel more like a local using public transportation and walking while exploring. Traveling without a car allows us to find more of the Mom & Pop shops that we might have otherwise passed by because we were focused on the road, fighting traffic or looking for a place to park.

The idea of being able to experience a city from a local’s point of view is why I created this podcast.

About the show

We’re going to travel around the world to interview people from all walks of life to uncover the hidden gems of the city by finding out the best things to do, eat, drink, and see from a local’s point of view.

Initially, we’ll launch with four interviews:

  • Nashville – Kate Dore shares the origins of Nashville Hot Chicken.
  • Austin – Noah Kagan tells us where to find the best breakfast taco.
  • Bentonville – Joe Saul-Sehy takes us to the home of Wal-Mart to tell us why this town is such a beautiful place to be outdoors.
  • Melbourne – Abby Lewtas shares where to find penguins on the beach.

After the initial launch, we’ll release two episodes a week for the next 8 weeks. Then, we’ll settle into a normal routine of releasing one episode every Monday.

Future episodes will have a variety of guests and destinations, such as:

  • Hong Kong
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Cancun, Mexico.
