I’m really excited to interview Mitch Krayton of Krayton Travel about Denver, Colorado. Mitch’s tips for the best things to do in Denver are awesome because he moved to Denver from Los Angeles a decade ago and loves the open sky, active trails, and how vibrant the city is in all four seasons.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is known as the Mile High City and is within a couple of hours’ drive of many popular ski resorts. It is the home of sports teams from all of the major sports leagues in the U.S. – Colorado Rockies (MLB), Denver Nuggets (NBA), Denver Broncos (NFL), and Colorado Avalanche (NHL). During your visit, schedule time to catch a show at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts or Red Rocks Ampitheatre and take in one of the many museums. The Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature & Science are also excellent choices.

There are all four seasons in Denver, but the weather is pretty mild overall. Although the surrounding mountains are filled with snow, much of it blows past Denver. There are many festivals and annual events throughout Denver. Two of Mitch’s recommendations are the Great American Beer Festival (October) and the Denver Christkindl Market (December). If you miss the beer festival, you can also do a self-guided tour among the many beer trails in Downtown Denver.

We share a lot of resources and local suggestions in today’s podcast, but you should also check out Visit Denver, the local visitor’s bureau. They are a wealth of information and can help you plan an itinerary based on your time, budget, and interests. When we visited for the first time, we saved over 50% with the Nashville Total Access Pass on some of the most popular attractions.

Getting around Denver

The local airport is Denver International Airport (DEN), which is about a 30-minute drive to downtown. The A Line is just $10.50 per person offers an easy ride from the airport to downtown.

Mitch says that, if you’re staying downtown, there’s no need to rent a car. It’s a very walkable city and the light rail system is fast, efficient, and inexpensive. You can also use Uber and Lyft to get around.

If you need to rent a car, visit Avis, Budget, or Hertz for the best offers. Or, when you only need a car for a couple of hours, you can rent by the hour with Zipcar. Join now to get $25 loaded into your account.
