I’m really excited to interview Marina Krivonossova of Retold about Leiden, Netherlands. Marina’s tips for the best things to do in Leiden are awesome because she moved to the Netherlands for her Master’s Degree and fell in love with Leiden during orientation week. She loves the architecture of the city and the hidden gems that keep daily life interesting.

Leiden, Netherlands
When traveling to Leiden, Marina suggests learning how to say “Thank you” (Dankuwel) and “Have a good day” (Fijne dag) so you can more easily interact with the locals.
We share a lot of resources and local suggestions in today’s podcast, but you should also check out Visit Leiden, the local visitor’s bureau. They are a wealth of information and can help you plan an itinerary based on your time, budget, and interests.

Getting around Leiden
The local airport is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), which is about a 15-minute drive from Leiden. Use our Expedia tool below to find flight, hotel, and rental car options.
Marina says that if you’re staying downtown, there’s no need to rent a car. Public transportation is accessible and affordable. Use the 9292 app for trains, buses, trams, metro and other public transit options. Or the Discover Holland ticket for unlimited public transport for one flat price. Uber and Lyft are not as popular in Leiden, so they may not be as available as in other cities.
If you decide to rent a car to explore the Netherlands outside of Leiden and beyond, visit Avis, Budget, or Hertz for the best rental car offers.
