I’m really excited to interview Scott Brills of Pamoja Safaris about Arusha, Tanzania. Scott’s tips for the best things to do in Arusha are awesome because he and his business partner have been running an ethical safari and Kilimanjaro trekking company for 15 years. Although he’s originally from Detroit, he spends about half the year in Tanzania, growing the company and helping customers have the experience of a lifetime.

Getting around Arusha
The local airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is about an hour away from Arusha. Use our Expedia tool below to find flight, hotel, and rental car options.
Scott says that most visitors do not rent a car. They are typically picked up by their tour operator or trekking provider. Or you can take a taxi for around $50 to $60. The usual rental car providers, like Avis, Budget, or Hertz, do not operate in Arusha.
Public transportation is limited to long-distance buses and short-distance minivans (dallah-dallahs) that are usually crammed with people. For most tourists, this experience won’t be enjoyable… especially while carrying your luggage.
