Portland, Oregon

Portland is a popular city for coffee, food, and craft brews. It is a hidden gem with incredible natural beauty surrounding it.

Although it rains quite often, it is usually just a soft mist so you can still get out and explore the city. Liz says that the best time to visit Portland is in the summer (from late June through early August). The sun is out, the temperature is comfortable, and the adventures are endless. For example, you can float on the river, listen to music at the Waterfront Blues Festival, or grab a cone at the Scooperfest Ice Cream festival.

We share a lot of resources and local suggestions in today’s podcast, but you should also check out Travel Portland, the local convention and visitor’s bureau. They are a wealth of information and can help you plan an itinerary based on your time, budget, and interests.

Getting around Portland

The local airport is Portland International Airport (PDX), which is less than 10 miles from the city center.

Liz says that you don’t need to rent a car if you’re staying in the Downtown area. You can take the MAX light rail from the airport for $2.50 and around the city ($5 day pass). Plus there’s always an Uber or Lyft nearby. And I’ve personally found the downtown area very walkable.

If you need to rent a car, click here for the best offers from Avis, Budget, or Hertz.

If you only need a car for a couple of hours, you can rent by the hour with Zipcar. Join now to get $25 loaded into your account.
