Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and is located along the East Coast of Australia. The Brisbane River cuts through the middle of the city and the city has embraced the river as a part of its life. You’ll find numerous bridges, “city cats,” and ferries to transport you back and forth across the river.

Queensland is known for its incredible weather, and Brisbane takes full advantage of the temperate climate. Breanda says that visitors will find that, like Goldilock’s porridge, the weather is “not too hot and hot too cold.” The only exceptions are December and January, which can be hot and humid. September and October is festival season, starting with the Brisbane Festival, Riverfire, Brisbane Good Food & Wine Show, and Breanda’s favorite, the “Writer’s Festival.”

Visitors can also enjoy the marvelous beaches and coastal islands during their stay. Breanda says that Coochiemudlo Island is a perfect place to spend a day on the beach with a picnic lunch. She also recommends Stradbroke Island to see the dingos and wildlife.

We share a lot of resources and local suggestions in today’s podcast, but you should also check out Visit Brisbane, the local convention and visitor’s bureau. They are a wealth of information and can help you plan an itinerary based on your time, budget, and interests.

Getting around Brisbane

The local airport is Brisbane Airport (BNE), which is about a 20-minute drive to downtown. Use our Expedia tool below to find flight, hotel, and rental car options.

Breanda says that the best way to see the city is to use a prepaid Go Card on the bus, train, or ferry. The Go Card provides a 50% savings over a paper ticket and is far more convenient. Many hotels also offer shuttles from the airport. Her favorite way to see the city is by the ferry since Brisbane is a river city.

Bicycles and electronic scooters are becoming very popular around the city. And Uber is also available in Brisbane.

If you’re looking to explore beyond the city core, renting a car is a good option. Parking is plentiful and reasonably inexpensive. For the best offers, visit Avis, Budget, or Hertz.
